HISTORY
Wyresdale Park was built in 1856–58, designed by E. G. Paley for the Ormrod family of Bolton. It has since been extended and outbuildings have been added. A lake was added to the grounds in 1897. The estate was put up for sale in 1924 and Shepherd Whewell purchased Nicky Nook Fell, Grizedale Valley and Holme Wood. In 1967 James Whewell purchased Wyresdale Park Hall and Sandsbottom Farm, making good on his commitment to keep the historic core of Wyresdale Park together.
The Whewell’s have maintained the estate as a working farm and sporting estate, with the younger generation coming onboard to open the house, grounds and farm buildings to tourism and leisure. Currently James Snr manages the sheep farming operation - still at the heart of Home Farm - Sally Whewell manages the cafe and glamping, and James Jnr manages the weddings and retail. James Snr keeps a watchful eye over the estate to ensure its heritage of farming is always preserved.
With so many activities happening in the same location, the estate has become a much loved visitor destination: from Lambing Time onwards we are busy surpassing the expectations of all those who take the time to visit and we encourage to make it your home from home.
